Balad-Xaawo, July 25, 2025 – More than 12 people have been killed since tensions erupted in Balad-Xaawo, Gedo region, amid ongoing armed clashes between forces aligned with Somalia’s Federal Government and the Jubbaland administration. The violence has reignited political blame, with both sides accusing each other of targeting civilians and destabilizing the area.

In a statement released today, Somalia’s Ministry of Internal Security accused Jubbaland leader Ahmed Madobe of fueling conflict in Gedo. The ministry alleged that militia under Madobe’s command attacked national army bases and civilian areas in Balad-Xaawo, calling it part of a broader campaign to divide and exploit the region’s population. The federal authorities pledged accountability for what they described as criminal acts against the Somali people, naming Madobe as the primary instigator.
Jubbaland responded with its own statement, strongly condemning what it called an indiscriminate mortar attack on Balad-Xaawo, allegedly carried out by forces loyal to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud from a nearby military base. According to Jubbaland officials, the shelling killed two civilians inside their homes and injured several others. The administration labeled the attack a deliberate act of aggression meant to displace and terrorize the local population.
As both governments continue to exchange accusations, the residents of Gedo remain caught in the middle, suffering casualties and damage from the ongoing unrest. Local leaders and international observers have called for restraint and urgent dialogue to prevent further bloodshed.
