MP Mursal KhaliF Condemns Federal Government's Focus on Gedo Amid Clashes

Mogadishu, July 25, 2025 – Somali Member of Parliament Mursal Khalif has publicly criticized President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration for deploying troops to the Gedo region instead of addressing growing insecurity near Mogadishu.

In a tweet posted on Friday, MP Khalif stated:

As Al-Shabaab operates with impunity in vicinity of Mogadishu, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud ’s priority is to move troops & resources into Gedo region in order to reverse peaceful Jubaland elections from 9 months ago. Electoral violence in BeledHawo today is exhibit A.

The tweet, which also tagged United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia_ and U.S. Embassy Mogadishu, comes amid rising tensions and armed clashes in Balad-Xaawo, Gedo region. MP Khalif was elected in March 2022 in Ceelwaaq, Gedo.
