Bosaso, Puntland, Somalia – August 4, 2025 — The President of Puntland, H.E. Said Abdullahi Deni, on Monday received a delegation from the Republic of Turkey led by Ambassador Alper Aktaş, Turkey’s envoy to the Federal Republic of Somalia.
The Turkish delegation’s visit follows ongoing discussions between the Federal Member State of Puntland and the Government of Turkey concerning the ownership and status of the cargo ship MV Sea World and its onboard goods.
According to Puntland authorities, the Turkish government submitted official documentation confirming full ownership of the ship and its cargo. Based on those documents and the outcome of an investigation into the matter, the Puntland administration has resolved to transfer custody of the vessel and all its contents to the Government of Turkey.
“This decision reflects Puntland’s commitment to international law and its dedication to upholding strong diplomatic relations,” read a statement from the Office of the President of Puntland.
The move is expected to ease tensions surrounding the vessel’s seizure and further enhance cooperation between Turkey and Puntland, a member state of the Federal Republic of Somalia. Turkey continues to be one of Somalia’s most influential international partners in infrastructure, education, security, and humanitarian support.
