
Somalia Endorses New State in Historic Las’aanod Conference

Las’aanod, Sool – July 30, 2025 — In a landmark event for Somalia’s federalization process, 417 delegates from Sool, Sanaag, and Buhoodle officially endorsed the Constitution of the new North Eastern State of Somalia, provisionally named SSC-Khaatumo, during a Grand Conference held in Las’aanod.
The eight-day conference concluded with unanimous support for the new state's formation, which was praised by the Federal Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation. Minister Ali Yusuf Ali (Koosh) presided over the closing ceremony, affirming federal support for the new entity.
The new federal member state, formally recognized as the North Eastern State of Somalia, will have Las’aanod as its capital.
The Ministry commended the delegates and local communities for achieving consensus through dialogue and peaceful engagement. It also announced the upcoming formation of key governance structures, including a state parliament and preparations for presidential and vice-presidential elections.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting inclusive governance, stability, and development across the newly established state.
