Somaliland Condemns Turkish Interference Over Meeting With Sultan Wabar

Hargeisa, 18 August 2025 — The Government of Somaliland has strongly condemned what it describes as interference by Türkiye, after reports confirmed a meeting in Mogadishu between the Turkish Ambassador and Sultan Wabar, a figure accused by Somaliland of involvement in activities hostile to its national security.

In a statement issued on Monday, Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdirahman Dahir Aadan, said he had summoned the Turkish Consul General in Hargeisa to express the government’s concern and demand an explanation.

“The Republic of Somaliland views this act as a clear violation and an unacceptable interference in its internal affairs,” the statement read. “Somaliland has formally requested an urgent and credible clarification from the Government of Türkiye regarding the motives behind such actions.”

Authorities in Hargeisa argue that engaging with Sultan Wabar, whom Somaliland designates as a threat to its sovereignty, undermines mutual respect and risks fueling instability in the Horn of Africa.

The Foreign Ministry further emphasized that Somaliland “will not tolerate actions that compromise its sovereignty, security, or national interests.”

Neither the Turkish Embassy in Mogadishu nor Ankara’s officials had issued an immediate response to Somaliland’s statement at the time of publication.
