Somalia’s future depends on its youth, yet persistent mismanagement and abuse of power in handling public resources—especially public land—have not only disrupted the livelihoods of low-income families in Mogadishu but have also deeply undermined young people’s trust in their country.
The problems arising from injustice and the abuse of government power in managing public resources, particularly public land, have not only affected the livelihoods of low-income families in Mogadishu but have also severely undermined Somali youths’ trust in their country.
Unfortunately, the government has neglected its responsibilities, including addressing unemployment and creating opportunities. Instead, commercial spaces where young Somalis were employed and had invested have been destroyed.
Every day, we see Somali youth leaving the country, citing the search for opportunities and hope. This reflects a failure of accountability for those in leadership and undermines a governance system that should be based on service and social care.
I urge the current leadership to pay special attention to Somali youth, provide them with confidence to invest in their own country, and encourage the creation of jobs by simplifying essential government procedures.
Shariif Sheikh Ahmed emphasizes that addressing these challenges requires urgent attention from Somali leaders. By fostering entrepreneurship, creating jobs, and streamlining government processes, Somalia can rebuild trust among its youth and provide meaningful opportunities for the next generation.
