Mogadishu, September 5, 2025 — Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has etched his name in history as the first Somali match official to be selected for a FIFA World Cup tournament.
Artan has been appointed among three centre referees from Africa for the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup 2025, scheduled to take place in Chile from September 27 to October 19. Remarkably, he is also the only representative from Sub-Saharan Africa chosen to officiate at the global youth tournament.
Africa’s Representatives
Artan will serve alongside Jalal Jayed of Morocco and Youcef Gamouh of Algeria, forming Africa’s trio of central referees at the competition. Their selection reflects FIFA’s recognition of African refereeing talent on the world stage.
In addition, several African assistant referees have been confirmed, including Gilbert Cheruiyot (Kenya), Abelmiro Montenegro (São Tomé and Príncipe), Khalil Hassani (Tunisia), Eric Ayimavo (Benin), Lahsen Azgaou (Morocco), and Mostafa Akarkad (Morocco).
A Trailblazer for Somali Football
Artan’s rise represents a landmark moment for Somali football. He had already broken barriers by becoming the first Somali referee to officiate a continental final, presiding over Pyramids FC’s victory against Mamelodi Sundowns in Cairo. He has also officiated matches at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), further cementing his credentials as one of the continent’s leading referees.
His World Cup appointment now places Somalia in the global spotlight, inspiring a new generation of Somali referees and football officials.
National Pride
The Somali Football Federation (SFF) welcomed the announcement, describing Artan’s selection as “a source of immense pride for the nation and the diaspora.” Analysts note that his achievement is not only personal but symbolic of Somalia’s growing presence in international football governance and competition.
