MOGADISHU, September 6, 2025 - Former President of Somalia, Shariif Sheikh Ahmed, has expressed concern over the consequences of government mismanagement and abuse of power in the administration of public resources, particularly public land. He noted that these issues have not only disrupted the livelihoods of low-income families in Mogadishu but have also significantly weakened Somali youths’ trust in their country.
Shariif Sheikh Ahmed pointed out that the government has neglected its duties, including tackling unemployment and creating economic opportunities. “Instead, commercial spaces where young Somalis worked and invested have been destroyed,” he said.
He further observed that “every day, Somali youth leave the country in search of opportunities and hope. This trend reflects a failure of leadership accountability and undermines a governance system meant to provide service and social support.”
The former president urged current leaders to focus on the needs of Somali youth, instill confidence for them to invest in their own country, and encourage job creation by simplifying essential government procedures.
